Thrust into the spotlight in 2009, Comme Des Garcons’ BLACK branch was formed out of necessity during the recession, establishing a more accessible price point aimed at making the brand’s most refined pieces more accessible to their following. Their desire to retaliate against the constantly-inflating luxury fashion industry takes the label back to basics, focusing more on details and silhouettes rather than flashy details. Typically known for bright graphics and colors, the diffusion brings about a complete 180 for CDG, its simplistic name is not just based on color, but theme. Brand head Rei Kawakubo is notorious for her deconstructed designs, and continues to showcase her advancements in the fashion world and why her empire’s three-letter title is so recognizable.
